Today is........💛🤍💜🖤Non-Binary Awareness Day 💛🤍💜🖤
And it hits home for me in a very real way......
Because before I ever whispered "I think I might be trans..."
…I saw gender non-conformity!
I saw people owning their space outside the binary. Infact I actually watched a "Non Binary in the workplace" talk online from Sky!!
I saw these folk living honestly, expressing freely and questioning everything we were told about “girl” and “boy.”
And it cracked something open in me.....in the best possible way.
That was my first glimpse of freedom......
Not male. Not female. Just…......real. Just them!
⚠️ Full disclosure:
My first “coming out” was a chaotic Facebook post without warning, announcing, almost accidentally, that I was Non Binary or Genderfluid to the masses! (deffo wouldn’t recommend 😅, especially if you blind side your friends and family - "Hello awkward call from a confused grandad!!").
But when you’ve been suppressing your truth for years, sometimes it explodes out......IYKYK 😜🏳️🌈
I didn’t have the words yet.......but NB people helped me find them.
Some people still ask:
“But what does non-binary mean, though?”
Let’s get real:
💛 Non-binary folks don’t identify strictly as male or female.
🤍 Some feel like both. Some like neither. Some like shifting sand dunes of fabulousness.
💜 It’s not a trend. It’s not new. It’s existed across time, cultures, and continents.
🖤 It’s not “confused”.........it’s authentic.
I mean, Did you know?
The term “non-binary” might be modern, but gender diversity dates back thousands of years.
Cultures around the world, from Indigenous Two-Spirit people to hijra in South Asia, have always held space for identities beyond male/female.
It’s estimated that 1 in 250 people identify as non-binary in the UK (and growing, as stigma falls, truth rises). *Let's also no pretend the stigma isn't prevalent though
Non-binary people face higher rates of discrimination, mental health challenges, and barriers to healthcare, simply for existing.
So today, I celebrate you all!
The non-binary people I know.
The ones I don’t.
The ones still figuring it out.
You helped me find me.
Your courage is a mirror and a roadmap.
You constantly challenge me to learn, unlearn, and do better.
So, Thank you for reminding the world that gender isn’t a box, it’s a beautiful spectrum of sorts.
Check out the Resource I created, it has some baseline info, allyship tips and might just help those who keep questioning the existence of Non-Binary peeps!
